About Us

Viva Sta. Ana de Hagonoy!

Rev. Msgr. Ranilo Santos Trillana, P.C.
President

HISTORY
Kapatiran ng Kapariang Taga-Hagonoy, Inc.

The Formation of a Brotherhood

From the 1800's to 1900's, many of the faithful have seen the increasing number of priests that have come from the province of Bulacan. It has been seen that during this time, 33% of priests in the Archdiocese of Manila were coming from the province of Bulacan, 94 priests in total from the years 1889 - 1949. In this percentage, it has been discovered that 23% of these priests come from the town of Hagonoy, Bulacan. This endeavor for the promotion of the priestly ministry to young men in Hagonoy started especially during the time of Rev. Msgr. Mariano V. Sevilla, then Parish Priest of the Church of St. Anne (1901 - 1922). This resulted to the numerous number of priests who have come from this town protected by its mother St. Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since the time of Rev. Fr. Celestino Rodriguez as Parish Priest of St. Anne (1936 - 1963), an initiative has been made to form a brotherhood of priests by Rev. Msgr. Jose B. Aguinaldo (San Pascual), then the Parish Priest of San Miguel Arcangel de Mayumo. The cause further intensified when in 1968, Msgr. Aguinaldo was transferred to the Parish of St. Anne. Finally, Msgr. Aguinaldo's dreams came to a reality when on February 16, 1971, the priests from Hagonoy gathered together and formed the association for Hagonoeño priests.

Hagonoy Priests' Association of Bulacan (HAPAB)

The association that was formed by the brotherhood of priests from Hagonoy came to be known at first as the Hagonoy Priests' Association of Bulacan. An elected set of officers were placed in charge with coordination and administration of the funds and affairs of the group:

Rev. Msgr. Jose Bernabe Aguinaldo
Diocese of Malolos
President

Rev. Msgr. Juan Sumala Bautista
Military Ordinariate of the Philippines
Vice President

Rev. Fr. Vicente Amado Bernardo Manlapig
Diocese of Malolos
Secretary

Rev. Fr. Vicente Santiago Vasquez
Diocese of Malolos
Treasurer

During Msgr. Aguinaldo's term, the cause for the construction of a Priests' Memorial Garden was concretized. The remains of the deceased Hagonoeño priests were transferred to the osuaries in the newly constructed cemetery on July 26, 1974. The mass in honor of St. Anne and the remembrance for the priests of Hagonoy was done at the church with the Most Rev. Leopoldo Arcaira, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Malolos presiding. Among those who spoke during the program were Governor Tomas Martin, Mayor Maria G. Santos, Rev. Fr. Benedicto Aguinaldo Carreon, OMI (San Jose) and Antonio Reyes.

Further, a charter for the association was made and was written through the help of Rev. Msgr. Emmanuel Vengco Sunga (Sto. Niño), Rev. Msgr. Antonio Quiambao Benedicto (Sta. Monica) and Rev. Msgr. Severino Miguel Pelayo. Fr. Vasquez, treasurer also organized the funds of the organization to help seminarians from Hagonoy in their financial needs and for programs for social action in the parish of St. Anne.

Kapisanan ng Kapariang Taga-Hagonoy (KAKATHA)

Soon after the construction of the memorial garden, the association elected a new set of officers with the Most Rev. Pedro Natividad Bantigue, D.D., (Sta. Monica) then Bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo, Laguna as president. In Bishop Bantigue's term, the association was firmly accepted by the Most Rev. Cirilo R. Almario, Jr., D.D., Bishop of Malolos. It was also during his time that the name of the association was changed from HAPAB to KAKATHA, Kapisanan ng Kapariang Taga-Hagonoy because he said the former was not much a "felicitous term." Together with Bishop Bantigue was the following set of officers:

Most. Rev. Pedro Natividad Bantigue, D.D.
Bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo
President

Rev. Fr. Solomon Ramirez Sebastian
Diocese of Malolos
Vice President

Rev. Fr. Enrico Saguinsin Santos
Diocese of Malolos
Secretary

Rev. Fr. Vicente Santiago Vasquez
Diocese of Malolos
Co-Treasurer

Rev. Fr. Nicanor Trinidad Victorino
Diocese of Malolos
Co-Treasurer

Buklod ng Pagkakaisa: Reconstruction of the Memorial Garden

Since Hagonoy was a coastal town, it has been prone to flooding for many years. Because of this, it became the prerogative of KAKATHA to be able to create a more fitting shrine for the deceased priests of Hagonoy. It was decided during a meeting made in Bishop Bantigue's residence in Calauang, Laguna where the promotion of Rev. Fr. Tranquilino Castro Cruz (Sta. Monica) was celebrated as well as the 25th anniversary of Rev. Fr. Modesto Perez Bonzon (Sto. Niño). Due to this concern, the body decided for the new set of officers to handle the reconstruction of the memorial garden. The following set was elected:

Rev. Fr. Tranquilino Castro Cruz
Chief Chaplain of the Armed Forces of the Philippines
Military Ordinariate of the Philippines
President

Rev. Fr. Vicente Amado Bernardo Manlapig
Diocese of Malolos
Vice President

Rev. Msgr. Severino Miguel Pelayo
Archdiocese of Manila
Secretary

Rev. Msgr. Juan Sumala Bautista
Military Ordinariate of the Philippines
Treasurer

Rev. Fr. Mariano Santiago Saguinsin

Diocese of Imus (Cavite)

Coordinator - Southern Tagalog Region

Rev. Msgr. Antonio Quiambao Benedicto
Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Yambot Celso
Archdiocese of Manila
Coordinators - Manila

Rev. Fr. Solomon Ramirez Sebastian
Rev. Fr. Anacleto Clemente Ignacio
Rev. Fr. Avelino Gonzales Santos
Rev. Fr. Enrico Saguinsin Santos
Rev. Fr. Andres Santos Valera
Diocese of Malolos
Coordinators - Bulacan

Rev. Fr. Benito Aguinaldo Carreon
Oblates of Mary Immaculate
Coordinator - Religious

Construction and landscaping services were made in order to improve the memorial garden which was dealt by Msgr. Bautista, treasurer of the association. Many of the priests of Hagonoy gave what they can for the fulfillment of the project. Msgr. Aguinaldo cited that Bishop Bantigue, Msgr. Benedicto, Msgr. Pelayo, Msgr. Sunga, Msgr. Vengco, Fr. Sebastian, Fr. Ignacio, Fr. Manlapig, Fr. del Rosario, Fr. Enrico Santos and Fr. Avelino Santos were among those who gave their help for the project. Many were also appreciative of the help given by young priests from Hagonoy like Fr. Valera as well as Rev. Fr. Manuel Martin Manicad (San Sebastian). During that time, Fr. Cruz was likely busy due to his duties in the army, thus Msgr. Aguinaldo was delegated to oversee the construction.

Accreditation and Success of Reconstruction

In 1999, during a meeting at the house of Msgr. Benedicto in Sta. Monica, the body wanted the young clergy to be able to lead the association so that fresh ideas can come to the brotherhood. This was the time that Rev. Msgr. Sabino Azurin Vengco, Jr. was elected president of KAKATHA.

During his time the reconstruction of the KAKATHA memorial garden continued with Rev. Fr. Vicente Burayag Lina, Jr., KAKATHA Treasurer looking into the site. During Msgr. Vengco's term KAKATHA was official registered to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as the Kapatiran ng Kapariang Taga-Hagonoy, Inc. Its by-laws and constitution was officially recognized and the brotherhood has grown to about a hundred priests. Also during Msgr. Vengco's term the association was able to trace deceased priests from Hagonoy during the Spanish Era. These were published in the association's newsletter Presbyteros. The KAKATHA has the following as its mission as a brotherhood written in Filipino:

1. Upang maging buklod na nagbibigkis sa lahat ng mga nasa Banal na Orden (Diyakono,
Presbitero at Episkopo, diyosesano o relihiyoso) na anak-Hagonoy sa diwa ng kapatiran at
   pagdadamayan;

2. Upang itaguyod and ganap na kapakanan ng mga kasapi, alinsunod sa pamantayan ng
Ebanghelyo ni Kristo, lalo't higit sa mga panahon ng pangangailangan, pagsubok,
    karamdaman, katandaan, at kamatayan;

    Orden.

5. At upang makipagbalikatan sa anumang kilusan at samahan na tumatangkilik sa kapariang
    Katoliko at Filipino.

Besides this fabrication of rules, the success of the reconstruction was officially achieved when the association was able   to get sponsorships from Senator Blas F. Ople, Congressman Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, Mayor Felix V. Ople and the San Miguel Corporation. The blessing of the new cemetery was done on January 27, 2002 by the Most Rev. Rolando Octavus J. Tria Tirona, D.D., then Bishop of Malolos.

Continuity and Legacy

Due to Msgr. Vengco's ministry for old and sick priests, there was a need to seek for someone in the Diocese of Malolos to take the lead in the organization. During this time, Rev. Fr. Vicente Burayag Lina, Jr. (Sto. Niño) was assigned to the Parish of Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario in Sto. Rosario, Hagonoy, Bulacan. With his assignment, the body decided to have a meeting in the parish convent. In 2003, the new set of officers was placed:

Rev. Fr. Vicente Burayag Lina, Jr.
Diocese of Malolos
President

Rev. Fr. Peter Julian Eymard Cabrera Balatbat
Diocese of Antipolo
Vice President
Secretary
Coordinator - Southern Tagalog Region and Manila

Rev. Fr. Virgilio Manghas Cruz
Diocese of Malolos
Coordinator - Bulacan

In 2007 a young and hardworking priest from the Clerks Religious of Somasca (CRS), Rev. Fr. Marcelino Nicolas Tiongson (Sto. Niño) was ordained a priest at the National Shrine of St. Anne. During this time, Fr. Lina sought for him to be the association's coordinator for the religious and he accepted.

Msgr. Jose B. Aguinaldo founded a foundation on 2000 before his demise which took care of funding for catechists and does what it can to also help finances for seminarians studying in theology. The new updated lists of KAKATHA were now published in the foundation's newsletter Batingaw. It continues to help KAKATHA under the leadership of Msgr. Sabino Vengco as chairman.

Last 26, 2013, feast of St. Anne, patroness of Hagonoy, the members of KAKATHA met at the Libingang Bantayog for the election of the new President, Vice President and the Treasurer. On October 29, 2013, the officers met again with a few senior members to appoint the new Secretary. This also comes with the move for a general assembly on February of 2014 and the ordinary assembly of the members to be set on October 29 of every year. As of this year, the new leaders of the brotherhood are as follows:

Rev. Msgr. Ranilo Santos Trillana, P.C.
Diocese of Malolos
President

Rev. Fr. Anacleto Clemente Ignacio
Diocese of Malolos
Vice President

Rev. Fr. Rolando Reyes Atienza
Diocese of Malolos
Secretary

Rev. Fr. Virgilio Manghas Cruz
Diocese of Malolos
Treasurer

At present KAKATHA has the following number of priests on record: 66 alive, 46 deceased and 5 have left the priesthood. The association continues to be a testament to the religious vocation to the priesthood of the faithful of Hagonoy that the priests continue to nourish under the tutelage of St. Anne, Mother Patroness of Hagonoy.
